Detroit Partner Melinda A. Balian was recognized as a 2023 Leader in the Law by Michigan Lawyers Weekly in its Leaders in the Law 2023 issue, which will be published on December 18, 2023. She will be honored at an awards luncheon in Troy, Michigan on December 5, 2023. 

This award is dedicated to recognizing Michigan lawyers who are setting the standard for other attorneys through their outstanding contributions to the practice of law and the justice system in Michigan. Michigan Lawyers Weekly highlights the honorees' leadership and expertise in diverse areas of the law.

Ms. Balian focuses her practice on employment law, helping organizations establish proactive policies to protect against employment-related claims. She has a robust litigation background, defending both private and municipal entities in cases involving wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and various civil rights claims. Ms. Balian also offers guidance on employee issues, including discipline, terminations, non-competition agreements, and employment manuals, and has extensive experience handling administrative claims with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. In addition to her work in the private sector, Melinda has served as a magistrate for Oakland County at the 52/3 District Court in Rochester Hills, Michigan since 1998.
