Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani Chicago Senior Counsel Jonathan L. Federman authored "Evidence and Practice Tips: When Character Evidence May Be Used to Demonstrate Propensity Evidence," published by Illinois Defense Counsel Quarterly in its Fourth Quarter 2023 issue.

This article explores the Illinois Rule of Evidence, in which character evidence is generally not admissible to show a defendant’s propensity to act in a similar manner, unless it is used to impeach a witness or to establish the party’s mental state, such as their intent, motive or knowledge.

Mr. Federman is Senior Counsel in the Chicago office of GRSM and a member of the Insurance, Commercial Litigation, and Appellate practice groups. His practice includes the representation of insurance company clients in disputes arising out of commercial general liability, professional liability, business auto, directors and officers, and other types of insurance policies. He provides opinions and recommendations to insurer clients faced with a potential claim as well as representation in declaratory judgment litigation.
